How to Enable 2FA for Gmail

Two-factor Authentication (2FA for short) adds another layer of security to your account. This type of authentication is available for a large number of popular apps and services, including Gmail.

After enabling 2FA for Gmail, it takes two steps to sign in to your account: the usual step that asks you for a password and the latter that requires a device or a security key, such as your phone.

How to Enable 2FA for Gmail

Fortunately, it is very easy to set up 2-step verification for Gmail, and we will show you how to do it below:

For starters, sign in to Gmail, as you usually do.

Then click on your profile icon in the upper right corner and select “Google Account” from the menu that appears. This will take you to https://myaccount.google.com/.

There, switch from the left sidebar to the Security tab and scroll down a little to the section called “Sign in to Google.”. Click on the option called ‘2-Step Verification’.

Click the ‘START’ button on the screen below. Enter your password again to continue when prompted.

If you have an Android phone, it may already be selected as the preferred 2FA method. If you don’t want to use your phone to sign in to Gmail, click on the ‘Choose another option’ link.

A small pop-up menu will appear, which allows you to choose a different option. For now, Gmail allows you to use a security key (if available) or get your codes via phone call or text message. After selecting an authentication method, click the ‘TRY NOW’ button.

For the purposes of this guide, we have selected the ‘Text message or voice call’ option. After clicking the ‘TRY NOW’ button, you will be asked to enter your phone number.

Enter your phone and choose how you want to get your codes: via text message or phone call. When you’re done, click ‘Next’.

Google will send a code to your phone in the way you previously chose. Once you have it, enter the code and press the ‘Next’ button.

Finally, you will be asked if you want to turn on 2-step verification for your Gmail account. Click ‘ON’ to enable 2FA. That’s it, that’s it!

You can always review your security settings on the https://myaccount.google.com page, including 2FA.
